Shamekia D. Lucas Academic Scholarship

Purpose/Goal of program

To reward academic achievement of individuals with sickle cell disease and to promote their pursuit of educational goals.

Number of Awards, and Amount

One award for a total of $4,500 for Medical Assisting program at Lucas Allied Health Training Institute. 

Who Qualifies

Individuals with sickle cell disease (individuals with sickle cell trait are not eligible)

Graduating high school seniors
US citizens and permanent residents

Qualification/Selection factors

•  Grade Point Average:      Minimum of 2.0 unless special hardship demonstrated

•  General academic achievement and promise

•  Leadership and community service

•  Quality of essay

•  Severity of academic challenges/obstacles posed by sickle cell disease

Maintenance of scholarship status in college

May 31, 2008 - Deadline for applications

July 17, 2008 - Scholarship Awarded

Student must remain in “good standing” by definition of Institution. 

Application Process

•  Applications (which can be reproduced) may be obtained from Lucas Allied Health Training Institute , Comprehensive Sickle Cell Centers and selected Sickle Cell Programs or

•  Students in regions not covered by local chapters, a Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center, or a Sickle Cell Program may request applications , in writing , from the Office.

•  All applicants must include physician's certification of sickle cell status        

•  Scholarship Committee will review all applications and select finalists

•  Application my be completed on-line.

  Essay Topic

Candidates will be asked to write a personal essay, not to exceed 1,000 words , on any aspect of the impact of sickle cell disease on their lives or on society.
